Essential Skin Preparation for Permanent Makeup in Essex
Updated: Aug 3
Why Skin Preparation Is Essential Before Permanent Makeup
Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing. A specialist technician uses a fine blade or needle to deposit pigment beneath the upper layers of the skin. Unlike a traditional tattoo, PMU pigments are designed to sit in the dermal layer and gradually fade over time — typically lasting anywhere from one to three years depending on the treatment and individual skin type. Because the pigment must be deposited precisely and at the correct depth, the state of your skin plays a critical role in the outcome.
Oily, congested, or dehydrated skin can cause the pigment to blur, spread unevenly, or not retain as well. Sunburnt or peeling skin creates an unpredictable canvas. Similarly, skin that has been recently treated with certain active ingredients — such as retinol, AHAs, or BHAs — may be too sensitised, increasing the risk of irritation and poor colour retention. Proper skin preparation removes these variables and sets you up for success.
Building the Ideal Skin Care Routine Before Your PMU Appointment
You don't need an elaborate 10-step regimen, but a consistent, gentle skin care routine in the four to six weeks leading up to your appointment will make a significant difference. Here's what we recommend at Jessica Marie PMU:
Hydration Is Everything
Well-hydrated skin holds pigment far more effectively than dry or dehydrated skin. Begin drinking at least two litres of water daily from at least four weeks before your appointment. Pair this with a quality hyaluronic acid serum and a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser morning and evening. For lip blush clients specifically, keeping the lips supple and moisturised with a nourishing lip balm — free from retinol or exfoliating acids — is particularly important.
Pause Your Active Ingredients
This is one of the most important skin preparation steps for permanent makeup and one that is frequently overlooked. Active skincare ingredients — including retinol (vitamin A), AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), and vitamin C — all work by accelerating cell turnover and thinning the upper layers of the skin. While this is brilliant for anti-ageing and skin clarity in day-to-day life, it creates a problematic canvas for PMU work. Stop using these products at least four weeks before your treatment.
If you use prescription retinoids such as tretinoin, please let us know during your consultation. These can affect the skin's sensitivity and pigment retention for longer periods, and we may advise a longer pause before your appointment.
Sun Protection and Tanning
Sun exposure causes the skin to thicken, become sensitised, and peel — all of which are counterproductive before a PMU treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to any area receiving treatment every single day, and avoid direct sunbathing or sun beds for a minimum of four weeks before your appointment. If you're due a holiday in the Essex sunshine (or somewhere a little more exotic!), plan your PMU appointment either before you travel or at least a month after you return with a proper tan. Self-tanning products should also be discontinued two weeks prior.
What to Avoid in the 48–72 Hours Before Your PMU Treatment
The final 48 to 72 hours before your appointment are just as crucial as the weeks of preparation beforehand. Here are the key things to avoid:
Alcohol — this thins the blood and can increase bleeding during the procedure, affecting pigment retention.
Caffeine — high caffeine intake (coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout supplements) can also increase sensitivity and bleeding.
Blood-thinning medications and supplements — including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba. Always consult your GP before stopping any prescribed medication.
Exfoliating scrubs or facial treatments — facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or any treatment that disrupts the skin barrier should be avoided for at least two weeks beforehand.
Botox or fillers — these should be completed either at least four weeks before your PMU appointment, or after the treated area has fully healed.
Waxing or threading the treatment area — the skin needs to be calm and unirritiated. Avoid waxing brows or upper lip for at least two weeks before.
Skin Type Considerations for Permanent Makeup in Essex
Every client who visits our Loughton studio is different, and skin type plays a major role in how we approach each PMU treatment. Understanding your skin type means you can prepare more effectively and set realistic expectations for your results.
Oily and Combination Skin
Oily skin tends to push pigment out more quickly, which means those with oily skin types often experience faster fading and may find that certain techniques — such as hair-stroke microblading — don't retain as crisply as on drier skin types. Powder ombré brows and machine techniques can actually work very well on oilier skin. In terms of preparation, we recommend using a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser twice daily and avoiding heavy occlusive moisturisers on the treatment area in the week leading up to your appointment.
Dry and Mature Skin
Dry skin — particularly the fine, papery texture that can develop with age — absorbs pigment beautifully but can also cause it to spread slightly, especially if the skin is very thin. Keeping the skin deeply moisturised in the weeks before your treatment is key. Focus on barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Clients with mature skin in the Loughton, Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill, and Epping areas often find that microblading gives them a stunning natural result with the right preparation and technique.
Sensitive and Rosacea-Prone Skin
If you have sensitive skin, rosacea, or a history of allergic reactions to cosmetics, it's essential to discuss this with us during your initial consultation. We may recommend a patch test prior to your appointment. Calming the skin barrier in the weeks beforehand is especially important — look for products containing centella asiatica, aloe vera, and oat extract, and avoid anything fragranced or potentially irritating.
On the Day of Your PMU Appointment: What to Do
You've done the prep work — now here's how to show up for your appointment in the best possible condition:
Arrive with a clean face — remove all makeup from the treatment area before your appointment.
Eat a light meal beforehand — low blood sugar can make you feel lightheaded during treatment.
Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water the morning of your appointment.
Avoid the gym — intense exercise raises your body temperature and can increase sensitivity during the procedure. Save your workout for another day.
Wear comfortable clothing — choose something that doesn't need to go over your head if you're having brow or facial work done.
Post-Treatment Skin Care: Protecting Your Investment
Preparation doesn't end when you leave the studio. The skin care choices you make in the days and weeks following your PMU treatment are equally critical for ensuring lasting, vivid results. During the healing process, the skin is delicate and the pigment is still settling. Your technician will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions specific to your treatment, but here are the general principles:
Keep the area dry for the first 7–10 days — avoid swimming, steam rooms, and excessive sweating.
Apply the aftercare balm provided by your technician — do not substitute with petroleum jelly or other products unless advised.
Do not pick or scratch — as the skin heals, it will flake. Picking the flakes removes the pigment with them.
Avoid active skincare ingredients on the treated area for a minimum of four weeks post-treatment.
Apply SPF diligently — UV exposure will fade your PMU significantly faster. Make sun protection a permanent part of your routine.
Frequently Asked Questions About Skin Care and PMU Preparation
How long before my PMU appointment should I stop using retinol?
We recommend stopping all retinol and vitamin A products — including prescription tretinoin — at least four weeks before your appointment. For those using strong prescription retinoids, stopping six weeks in advance is advisable. This allows the skin to return to its natural thickness and sensitivity level, ensuring optimal pigment retention.
Can I have permanent makeup if I have very oily skin?
Yes, absolutely — but technique selection is key. Oily skin types typically achieve better results with powder ombré brows or a combination technique rather than pure hair-stroke microblading. During your consultation at our Loughton studio, we'll assess your skin type and recommend the most suitable technique for your skin. Proper preparation and follow-up top-up sessions help maintain results on oilier skin types.
Is sunscreen really necessary before a PMU treatment?
Yes — daily SPF is one of the most important things you can do both before and after your PMU treatment. UV exposure not only affects your skin's suitability for treatment on the day but also dramatically accelerates the fading of your pigment once the work is done. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50 applied every morning (yes, even on overcast British days!) will help your results stay vibrant for longer.
Do I need to do anything special to prepare my lips for lip blush?
Lip blush preparation is particularly important because the lips are a delicate and highly mobile area. In the two weeks before your lip blush appointment, keep your lips well-moisturised with a plain, unfragranced lip balm. Avoid any lip scrubs or exfoliants in the final week. If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), please let us know — we'll advise you to take a course of antiviral medication (such as Aciclovir) in the days before and after your treatment to prevent a breakout.
How soon after a facial can I have PMU done?
We recommend waiting at least two weeks after any facial treatment — including HydraFacials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or LED therapy — before having permanent makeup. More intensive treatments like laser resurfacing or micro-needling require a longer recovery period; please discuss your recent treatment history with us during your consultation.
