Skin Care Prep for PMU: Get the Best Results

6 min read

You've booked your permanent makeup appointment — congratulations! Whether it's microblading, lip blush, or ombre brows, you're about to invest in a look that can last up to two years. But here's something many clients overlook: the condition of your skin on the day of your treatment can make or break your results. At Jessica Marie PMU in Loughton, Essex, we consistently see that clients who prepare their skin properly heal faster, retain pigment better, and enjoy a more even, beautiful finish. In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about skincare preparation for permanent makeup — from what to apply (and avoid) in the weeks leading up to your appointment, to how to care for your skin afterwards for the best possible outcome.

Why Skin Preparation Matters for Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing — pigment is deposited into the upper layers of the skin using a fine needle. Because the process interacts directly with your skin's structure, the health, hydration, and condition of your skin at the time of treatment directly affects how well the pigment is absorbed and retained.

Oily skin may cause pigment to spread slightly, while dry or dehydrated skin can result in patchy retention. Sun-damaged or heavily textured skin presents additional challenges during the healing phase. By preparing your skin in advance, you create an optimal canvas that holds pigment evenly and heals cleanly — giving you the gorgeous, long-lasting results you're paying for.

Your 4-Week Skincare Plan Before PMU Treatment

4 Weeks Before: Stop Retinol and Active Ingredients

If you use retinol, retinoids (such as Retin-A or tretinoin), AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), or vitamin C serums in the treatment area, you must stop using them at least four weeks before your appointment. These ingredients thin and sensitise the skin, which can cause excessive bleeding during the procedure, poor pigment retention, and a prolonged healing process.

This is one of the most important steps clients in Loughton, London, and across Essex often underestimate. Many popular skincare products — from The Ordinary to SkinCeuticals — contain these actives, so do check your routine carefully.

2 Weeks Before: Protect and Hydrate

Two weeks out, your focus should shift to building up your skin's barrier and keeping it well hydrated. Switch to gentle, fragrance-free moisturisers and avoid anything that strips the skin. SPF is your best friend at this stage — UV exposure causes pigmentation irregularities and thins the skin over time, both of which work against a smooth PMU result.

  • Use SPF 30 or higher daily on the treatment area

  • Avoid sunbeds and prolonged sun exposure — especially important for Essex summers!

  • Drink plenty of water — aim for 2 litres a day to keep skin hydrated from within

  • Discontinue any prescription topical skin treatments unless advised otherwise by your doctor

1 Week Before: Avoid Blood Thinners and Exfoliants

In the seven days before your treatment, avoid blood-thinning substances where possible. This includes alcohol, ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil supplements, and vitamin E. Increased bleeding during the procedure dilutes the pigment as it's being implanted, which leads to faded, uneven results during healing.

Also avoid any facial peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments in the week before your appointment. These procedures can disrupt the skin barrier and increase sensitivity, making it harder for the pigment to settle correctly.

24 Hours Before: Your Final Prep Checklist

  1. Avoid alcohol entirely for the 24 hours prior to your appointment

  2. Do not consume caffeine on the morning of your treatment — it can increase bleeding and anxiety

  3. Arrive with a clean face — no makeup, creams, or oils on the treatment area

  4. Eat a light, nutritious meal beforehand — low blood sugar can make you feel faint

  5. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid tight necklines if having a brow or face treatment

  6. If you're having lip blush, exfoliate your lips gently and apply a lip balm the night before

Skin Types and Special Considerations

Not all skin types are the same, and at Jessica Marie PMU we tailor our approach to suit every client. Here's what you need to know based on your skin type:

Oily or Combination Skin

Oily skin is the most challenging skin type for PMU. Excess sebum can cause pigment to soften and spread, leading to a blurrier effect over time. If you have oily skin, we may recommend an additional touch-up session and a powder/ombre technique rather than hair strokes for brows. In the weeks before your appointment, use a gentle, balancing cleanser and avoid heavy moisturisers that increase oiliness.

Dry or Mature Skin

Dry and mature skin tends to absorb pigment differently, and fine lines can make precise application more challenging. Focus heavily on hydration in the month leading up to your appointment — hyaluronic acid serums (without active exfoliants) are an excellent choice. Avoid any procedures that cause dryness or flaking in the treatment area.

Sensitive or Reactive Skin

If you have sensitive, reactive skin or a history of allergic reactions, please inform us at your consultation. We carry out patch tests prior to all treatments and our pigments are vegan, hypoallergenic, and compliant with UK cosmetic regulations. Simplify your skincare routine before your appointment — fewer products means fewer potential irritants.

Post-Treatment Skincare: Protecting Your Investment

The first two weeks after your PMU treatment are critical. Your skin will be healing and the pigment will be settling into place — how you care for it during this time will directly impact your final result. We provide detailed aftercare instructions with every treatment, but here are the fundamentals:

  • Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first 7–10 days

  • Apply the aftercare balm provided — a thin layer only, 2–3 times a day

  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel any flaking skin — this pulls out pigment and can cause scarring

  • Avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms, and intense exercise for 2 weeks

  • Stay out of direct sunlight and do not apply SPF directly onto a healing wound

  • Resume retinol and active skincare products only after the area is fully healed (usually 4–6 weeks)

Longer term, use SPF on healed brows or lips daily to prevent pigment fading. Retinol and skin-lightening ingredients can fade PMU pigment prematurely, so apply these around the treated area rather than directly on it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skincare and PMU

Can I wear makeup to my PMU appointment?

You can wear makeup to your appointment, but please arrive with a clean, makeup-free treatment area. For brow appointments, remove any brow pencil or powder beforehand. For lip blush, arrive with bare lips. We'll cleanse the area before we begin, but starting fresh helps us map the shape accurately.

How long after a chemical peel can I have PMU?

We recommend waiting at least 4–6 weeks after a chemical peel before having any permanent makeup treatment. The peel significantly sensitises the skin and alters its texture, both of which affect pigment retention. Always let us know about any recent cosmetic procedures during your consultation.

Will my skincare routine affect how long my PMU lasts?

Yes, significantly. Regular use of retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and exfoliating products over the treated area will cause the pigment to fade faster than average. Sun exposure is also a major factor — always use SPF on healed permanent makeup to maintain colour longevity. With the right skincare habits, your PMU can last 12–18 months before a colour refresh is needed.

I have eczema or psoriasis — can I still have PMU?

Clients with eczema or psoriasis may still be suitable for permanent makeup treatments, but this is assessed on a case-by-case basis during your consultation. The condition must not be active in or near the treatment area. We always prioritise your safety and will advise honestly if we feel a treatment isn't in your best interest.
